Membership

Our membership fees are very good value. After you pay your yearly fee, we do not charge on-going range fees, or require members to purchase their own targets.

Requirements and Time Commitment

If you cannot commit to the program, due to work, study or family commitments - please consider very carefully whether you will be able to complete the course of training required.

The club's approval is needed to get a probationary pistol license - failure to complete the Training will result in Firearms Registry rejecting your license application or cancelling your probationary license if issued.

You are required to undertake three (3) competition shoots within six (6) months of receiving your Probationary Pistol Licence from the Service NSW.

This comprises the second part of your PPL Pistol Safety Training. These matches will allow you to become familiar with the Range Procedure while shooting under the control of a Range Officer. When your three scores are recorded the club will send you a Completion Certificate PPL Safety Training for your records.

You will need to attach a copy of this when applying for a PTA (Permit to Acquire) or a full H Licence as well as a proof of membership document. You are allowed to purchase two firearms after having your PPL six (6) months.

The club is required to notify Firearms if you do not complete these matches and you will not be able to obtain an H Licence when your PPL expires.

Obtaining Your Pistol License

Firearms licensing in NSW is overseen by the NSW Police Firearms Registry.

The process to obtain a full Category H (Handgun) license will take at least 12 months and involves the following broad steps.

Step 1 - Join a Pistol Club

The use of pistols in NSW is highly regulated with licenses generally being issued for two reasons, those being employment or target shooting. We can’t help you with employment licenses but if you are interested in the sport of target shooting that’s a different matter. Any person wishing to hold a Category H (Handgun) license for target shooting purposes must also be a member of a registered target pistol club. Port Macquarie Pistol Club is one such club.

Step 2 - Probationary License

After joining a pistol club, you will undergo safety training and be eligible to apply for a Category H Firearm license. If successful you will enter a 12 month probationary period where you will be able to participate in pistol shooting events under instruction and supervision but will have limitations on owning and possessing Cat H firearms. There are government imposed mandatory participation requirements for probationary license holders.

You must participate in at least 3 shooting activities in the first six months of your probation and a minimum of a further 3 shooting activities in your second six months of probation.

Step 3 - Category H License

After completing your 12 month probationary period including all participation requirements, you will be eligible to apply to the NSW Police Firearms Registry for a full Category H license.

All target pistol shooters with Category H licenses must continue to remain a member of a licensed pistol club and continue to actively participate in the sport by taking part in at least 6 competitive shooting matches each year for which a score is kept.
